Founded in 1965, the Forest of Mendip Lodge has a rich history and a strong sense of camaraderie among its members. Originally based in the distinctive Temple at Rickford, the Lodge met there for over 50 years. However, by 2017, the cost of maintaining the unique building prompted a relocation to the Yatton Masonic Hall. This move has proven successful, and the Lodge continues to thrive.
One of the defining characteristics of the Forest of Mendip Lodge is its diversity. Unlike some lodges that have specific themes or occupational focuses, this Lodge welcomes men from all backgrounds. Among the members are professionals such as architects, solicitors, accountants, and police officers, as well as business owners and skilled tradesmen from industries like automotive and construction. The average age range of members tends to fall within the 40s and 50s, which brings a balanced blend of experience and energy.
This diversity fosters an inclusive environment where new members can form friendships beyond their usual social or professional circles. It's an ideal setting for those looking to broaden their network while engaging in meaningful community service and personal development.
The Forest of Mendip Lodge is not just about formal meetings. Members enjoy a wide variety of hobbies, including clay pigeon shooting, scuba diving, fishing, motorcycling, golf, and music. This shared enthusiasm for recreation extends into the Lodge's active social life and its notable presence within the Province.
Nicknamed the "Forest of Mendip Lodge Wanderers," members frequently visit other lodges as a group, fostering bonds within the wider Masonic community. This tradition of travel and fellowship enhances the Lodge's reputation for being both friendly and active.
Community and family are central to Lodge life. Throughout the year, members organise several social events where partners and families are warmly welcomed. These include Sunday lunches, breakfast meetings, quiz nights, and the annual Christmas lunch—where widows of past members are also invited, reflecting the Lodge’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and remembrance.
A highlight of the social calendar is the annual Ladies’ Evening, typically held at a local hotel. This elegant event allows members and their partners to enjoy an evening of fine dining and celebration, with the ladies encouraged to dress in their finest attire and enjoy a well-deserved evening of pampering.
The Forest of Mendip Lodge meets eight times a year—on the Friday following the third Wednesday of February, March, April, May, June, September, October, and November. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and usually conclude around 10:30 p.m. Following each meeting, members enjoy a formal dinner, known in Masonic tradition as the "Festive Board." These dinners also feature raffles, with proceeds donated to local charities.
Over the years, the Lodge has supported a wide range of causes including the Great Western Air Ambulance, PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals), Springboard, local scouting groups, and many more.
For those interested in joining a supportive community, making new friends, and giving back to society, the Forest of Mendip Lodge offers a unique and fulfilling path.
